The Appeal of Juice Stains & Lilly Pulitzer

Bookmark and Share

I have owned several Lilly Pulitzer summer dresses over the years. They are bright, fun and easy to wear. I was reminded again of the brand appeal on a recent trip to Vermont when I walked into a Pulitzer store.

The story of the Lilly Pulitzer brand began when she married and moved to Palm Beach from New York in the 1960s. Her husband owned citrus groves and Lilly decided to open a juice stand. The stains from the juices however, kept ruining her clothing, so she had a dress made from colorful cotton to hide the stains!

From practicality comes an entire brand and clothing line, which still exists today.

The original dress was a sleeveless, short, shift style. Branching into longer dresses, swimsuit cover-ups, skirts and blouses, even Jackie Kennedy wore one. Kitschy prints, abstract prints, cotton and color were their trademark.

They still maintain their summer, beachy appeal don't you think?

Here is a handy glossary of terms. I'll post several over the next couple of weeks.

My Favorite Color is Still Blue

Bookmark and Share

Ask a kid their favorite color. Guaranteed most will say blue. What is it about this color that is so attractive to kids? Is it because it's easy to recall the name? It is also a primary color, which are some of the first colors a child learns.

But I'm not a kid and my favorite color is still blue. Mind you, I appreciate the many shades and tones which for spring, is an absolute joy to see. Have a look at this collection. It makes my heart warm!

MAMMA MIA SOPHIA!

wallcrow.com

Looking at some of our featured vintage dresses got me thinking about the amazing Sophia Loren.  I consider her one of my Hollywood goddesses.  Her exotic beauty and impossibly fabulous figure has made her a living legend.  Loren has won an Oscar, Golden Globes, a Grammy, and many others.  At age 77, she is still as vivacious as ever.

One of my favourite of her films is "Houseboat" co-starring Cary Grant.  There's something really funny and goofy and romantic about this film.  I think I like the idea of a dad who is so panicked about raising his kids alone on a houseboat.  Loren has a serendipitous meeting with one of the children and the rest is history.

Here are some dresses that I could imagine Sophia wearing when feeling like a siren and when she is feeling like the girl next door...

"AD-VINTAGES" of Looking to the Past

Just for curiosity, I looked for the origins of the word “Vintage”.  It dates back to the 15th century, culminating from various words and their evolved forms such as the Latin vindēmia ‘grape gathering’ and dēmere ‘take away, take off’.  The English form of the word came from old French vendange or vendage, soon changed to vintage.  This word was primarily used to describe grape crops until the late 1920’s when application of the word extended to the automobile industry.

I suppose my instincts were correct in comparing vintage clothing to fine wine or vintage cars as they seem to with age, appreciate in value and increase in popularity.  We often believe in the notion that the clothes make the man – or the woman.

James Cameron’s “Titanic” was on television the other night.  The first shot of Kate Winslett was romantic and awe-inspiring as she regally exited her beautiful car wearing a stunning dress and hat.  She was assisted by her dashing companion, impeccably dressed in the latest men’s fashions of that time.

Perhaps our love of and interest in vintage clothing comes from the yearning for that romantic feeling of by-gone eras when it was encouraged for women to be feminine and men to be dashing and gallant.  We want to FEEL good, not just look good.

Most of us have a need to escape the grind of our daily lives by diving into a good book or going for a relaxing massage.  The beauty of vintage is that by looking to the past, we can feel good about our present.

My New Favorite-Retro Ruching

This is my new favorite dress. We just got it in last week and I am in love with it!

A creamy, buttery satin gown with ruching from head to toe. One can not help but have the most amazing curves in this gown. Don't you think every woman should wear a mermaid style dress just once? What an hour-glass figure this will provide the wearer. Personally, I think this is a fantastic bridal gown - modern and sexy. What more could a bride to be want? A little bouquet and "I do"!
