VINTAGE LOVES OSCAR

Stars of "The Artist" welcome you

Well, what did you all think about this year's Academy Awards?  I personally loved the return of Billy Crystal.  As usual, there were plenty of gorgeous gowns to admire.  The beauty of the vintage venue was the perfect backdrop for this event:

With 6 of the 9 nominated films set in the past, it's no wonder that vintage inspirations were everywhere.  I loved the 1930's era candy girls who went down the aisles handing out popcorn to the audience members.  Sigh...another Oscars come and gone. I'm already looking forward to next year.

MAMMA MIA SOPHIA!

wallcrow.com

Looking at some of our featured vintage dresses got me thinking about the amazing Sophia Loren.  I consider her one of my Hollywood goddesses.  Her exotic beauty and impossibly fabulous figure has made her a living legend.  Loren has won an Oscar, Golden Globes, a Grammy, and many others.  At age 77, she is still as vivacious as ever.

One of my favourite of her films is "Houseboat" co-starring Cary Grant.  There's something really funny and goofy and romantic about this film.  I think I like the idea of a dad who is so panicked about raising his kids alone on a houseboat.  Loren has a serendipitous meeting with one of the children and the rest is history.

Here are some dresses that I could imagine Sophia wearing when feeling like a siren and when she is feeling like the girl next door...

Full Service with a smile?

We receive the Saturday newspaper.  Much to our chagrin, our "paperboy" who is actually a middle aged man in a run-down sedan, cannot seem to make it to our porch until late morning every week.  We've complained a few times, but at the end of the day, it doesn't matter that much.

All things being fodder for the world of blogs, I began to wonder what has happened to our 'home delivery' society?  I believe that some parts of the U.K. still get their milk delivered to their front doors each morning.  What happened with us?  A number of years ago, one of our local supermarket chains started a delivery service which is fairly pricey and to be honest, a pain in the neck to use as it's an Internet based ordering system, so filling up my shopping cart can be very difficult and time-consuming.  We get numerous flyers from local eateries that offer delivery but there is usually an exorbitant minimum to qualify or there is a fee regardless of order size.  It seems that current day systems of home delivery have been created to actually dissuade us and convenience comes at a high price.

I miss the days of paper boys who were actually the neighbourhood kids who rode their bikes and threw the newspaper in the bushes for some pocket money.  The old fashioned drug stores used to deliver - some still do but to qualify there is a mysterious system that seems to cater to only seniors.

Our self service world is tiring sometimes.  I like the occasional lazy indulgence.  I wonder if the increasing number of "Type A" personalities have become that way out of necessity as it's becoming more and more apparent that if we don't get it ourselves, we have to do without.

Vern: Do you think Mighty Mouse could beat up Superman?

Teddy: What are you, cracked?

Vern: Why not? I saw the other day. He was carrying five elephants in one hand!

Teddy: Boy, you don't know nothing! Mighty Mouse is a cartoon. Superman's a real guy. There's no way a cartoon could beat up a real guy.

Vern: Yeah, maybe you're right. It'd be a good fight, though.

I love these lines from the movie "Stand By Me".  These boys were on the cusp of adolescence, unaware that their child-like innocence would soon be gone.  We seem to currently be in a love fest with vintage and retro superheros.  Recently a remake of "The Green Lantern" scored top box office earnings.  Not too long ago the "Green Hornet" made its cinematic debut as well.  I think they're doing yet another Spider Man and more Superman movies.  The 1980's were all about beefy men fighting the bad guys.  The 1990's were filled with martial artists who became the main protagonists.  The new millennium gave way to more technically assisted heroes such as the "X-men" franchise and animated action figures.

All things retro being so current these days, it's no wonder that "old school" superheros are coming back in vogue.  I've always loved the heroes who walk among us like Clark Kent, Peter Parker and Matt Murdock (Daredevil).  Humanizing these godly figures makes them far more attractive and accessible.

I like that along with retro and vintage fashion, architecture, furniture and music, it's great to see that our superheros are not forgotten.

MEN ARE FROM MARS, WOMEN ARE FROM EARTH...

Recently I took a poll of friends and neighbours.  I asked them to say the first word that popped into their heads when I said the word "VINTAGE".  All the men said OLD whereas all the women had other words that were more descriptive, such as HISTORIC, TIMELESS and CLASSIC.  I then asked the men to come up with some nouns to go with the word VINTAGE.  They said CARS and WINE, whereas the women said CLOTHING and  JEWELLERY.

This little poll reinforced my opinion that more women are interested in vintage clothing then men.  Men may wear "vintage inspired" clothing that are new from current designers.  But women seem more drawn to second hand boutiques and online shopping for their vintage goods.

Do we need to work at changing the views of men?  I say no.  Let's leave things as they are.  Those of us who love men should love them for who they are rather than who we want them to be.  Let's try not to mould them to fit into our impossible images or fantasies.  (Like men do with us!)

I don't know about you, but weather has a lot of influence on my mood.  These days, I feel the sun shining on my face and the breeze doesn't make me want to run for shelter.  Trees have that chartreuse hue and the tulips are in their full glory.  When I'm feeling this alive, my wardrobe starts to shift from sombre black to colours and patterns.  What better way to celebrate spring than with polka-dots...
