Throwback Thursday: Halloween or the 1970s?

Bookmark and Share

With Halloween around the corner what better time for a truly funky Throwback Thursday?

Could this picture be anymore indicative of the seventies? I love how fun these outfits are! Although they don't look like outfits that we would see in everyday life currently, they are still representative of 1970s trends that have become repopularized. There has been an influx of bright patterns recently and a departure from standard black jackets in menswear. We have also seen larger pronounced collars buttoned up all the way in women's wear.

It is always fun to take a glance into a decade, especially one as diverse as the seventies. A huge thank you to Maryann for sharing this fun vintage moment! Heres hoping it provides you with some Halloween inspiration!

Throwback Thursday: Sunday Best

Bookmark and Share

After a two week hiatus, Throwback Thursday is finally back! This vintage fashion moment was sent in by Sharon, who is the little tyke on the left. This photograph captures mother and daughter in their Sunday's best.

I love the cut and style of Sharon's mother's day-dress. A far cry from the full as can be skirts of the 1950s, this early 1960s dress has a tailored pencil skirt with clean classic lines. This style of dress has been brought back decade after decade, the cut is so classic that it has become timeless. We are seeing a demand in day dresses of this sort in vintage fashion as well as in contemporary wear.

The dress is beautiful, but my favourite item by far is the mock doctors satchel. Those who know me can attest that I am constantly in search of quality vintage bags in this shape! For those of you who accessorize minimally, as I generally do, unique shapes of clothing and the few accessories worn speak volumes. Also, If you look closely you can see that little Sharon has her own purse to match her adorable outfit as well.

A huge thank you to Sharon for sharing this heart-warming vintage fashion moment which demonstrates the timelessness certain styles can achieve! Look for another fantastic retro fashion moment next Thursday.

Throwback Thursday: Here Comes the Bride

Bookmark and Share

Wedding season is coming to an end as we approach Autumn. So, what better time for a bridal edition of Throwback Thursday?

This photo was sent to us by Arnolda, it is of herself on her wedding day in the 1960s! Doesn't she look incredible?  This wedding dress comes across as very of its time, especially with the feather trim on the hem and neckline. It is a very unique dress. Although quite feminine, this dress has a few touches that are mostly seen in men's fashion. The fabric added below the bust line drops to the low waist, giving the illusion of a cummerbund. Arnolda is also wearing boutonnière, what a clever touch for dress that is on the less ornate side!

This dress may be dated, but with some minimal alterations it could be worn at any modern wedding. Full length sleeves are especially popular with brides following the Royal Wedding. The key to the perfect wedding dress is the same as with any outfit, you must make it your own. It is clear that Arnolda did!

A huge thank you to Arnolda for sharing this beautiful vintage fashion (and life) moment with SLV! We will be back next week with another look into the fashion of the past.

Throwback Thursday: Hello, Dolly!

Bookmark and Share

Today's Throwback Thursday comes to us from Beverley.  It is a picture of her great aunt Dolly in the 1930s.  Wow, what an outfit this is! Particularly because this picture was taken in  the pre-war post depression era, not a time where people felt inclined to slip into their glad rags.

It's true that this frock is not exactly modern.  However, if it looks familiar it is because this dropped waist style of dress was re-popularized in the 1980s (Prom, anyone?!). As were smocked dresses. The small details are what I love most about this vintage outfit. Most notably, the scalloped edge of the smock on upper half of the dress, and the embroidery.  Doesn't it make you wonder what colour the smock is?!

A huge thank you to Beverley for sharing this vintage fashion moment with us! We'll see you back here for next week's edition
of Throwback Thursday.

Throwback Thursday: Clever Hat

Bookmark and Share

This Throwback Thursday was sent to us by Diane Leah and was taken in the early 1980s.

She is pictured here in the dressing room before her band took the stage.  The outfit is casual and simple, but well put together.  I love the tie at the bottom left hand side of the sweater.  We also see reliance on only black and white to make up the outfit.  This power point 1980s look has come back once again and you can see lots of sleek black and white clothing, be it casual or formal, out on the street.  I especially love the hat! It makes the entire outfit and is a great shape for her face.  As we have mentioned before hats are back!

Many thanks to Diane for sharing this vintage fashion moment with SLV! We'll see you back here next Thursday!

Throwback Thursday: Boho Chic

Bookmark and Share

Today's Throwback Thursday was sent to us by Angela Cockburn. The picture was taken in the early 1980s (I know vintage already...time flies!), however the clothing is from the late 1970s.

Recent parents Angie and David were heading out for a well deserved date night when a family member snapped this shot.  I love how the wide-sleeve top creates a shawl effect. Wide-sleeve tops have become quite popular again recently, very flowy and bohemian.  Although not pictured, the skirt is maxi length, another item that has become a summer fashion staple for ladies once more. Angie has belted the top for a more defined waist, a practical accessory that balances the top and bottom of the outfit.

Although this outfit has a vintage look, there is not one piece of clothing that would not work well in a modern closet! It is a testament to the cyclical nature of fashion because great pieces never really go out of style.

A huge thank you to Angela (and David!) for sharing this vintage fashion moment with SLV! More to come next Thursday.

Cream of the Crop

Bookmark and Share

This summer has been dominated with 1980s and 1990s fashion staples and the daring crop top is back. It's a controversial fashion choice because cropped tops can show a lot of skin, however, this wasn't always the case. We have seen cropped items as early as the Victorian era in modern fashion.  These usually came in the form of belero jackets (sophisticated shrug) worn over other items of clothing and became decidedly less modest through the decades.

Vintage 1920s Coral Pink Lace Bolero Jacket, $75

By the mid-twentieth century we began to see cropped short sleeve and sleeveless tops paired with matching capri pants or skirts that met in the middle.  This trend continued into the 1960s and 1970s, with a lot more tummy being showed in between the top and bottom of the outfit!

Vintage 1950s Green & White Cropped Top with Belt, $39.99

In the 1980s and 1990s crop tops were...well...extra cropped. These tops were bold fashion statements that left little to the imagination! A great DIY spirit can be seen in these pieces, as they were often re-cut and tied higher than they were when purchased.

We have seen the crop top make its comeback the last few years, but the best part is that not one style of crop top is back in fashion...they all are! There are a wide range of cropped styles that are currently fashionable, making this go-around creative and unique.

Don't think crop tops are for you? Think again.
-Abs for days? Rock the high crop.
-Cute and flirty? Use a high-waisted bottom.
-Fancy? Pair with palazzo pants or an elegant maxi skirt.
Not into skin? Put a tank under a tie-up crop.
Don't love the look? Accentuate your waist with a bolero jacket or cropped jean vest.

Crop tops are meant to be fun and versitile! Experiment wearing crop tops different ways or find a cropped look that works for you, and be sure to check out more cropped options in the SLV store now!

Throwback Thursday: Sailor's Delight

Bookmark and Share

This week's Throwback Thursday picture came to us from "W.T", and is of a family member in the 1930s.  The picture has worn a bit with age, but eight decades will do that! It's still a wonderful shot featuring a great vintage outfit.

The 1930s were an exciting time in fashion for women as many donned pants and blouses in lieu of the more traditional skirts and dresses.  The trousers were high-waisted with large full legs that hit the ankle. Look familiar?  They should! This style of pant had a resurgence in the late 1960s and 1970s and are back in a big way currently.

I love this picture so much.  I especially like the adorable sailor button detailing on the front of the trousers. If you look closely you can see that the cap-sleeve shirt also has button detailing on it creating a full outfit effect! Just darling. Sailor inspired outfits were also a hot trend in the 1930s, specifically for women.  Everything from dresses and trousers to bathing suits were adorned with sailor stripes, double breasted buttons, and jumper flaps.  The color "Navy Blue" was also concieved. Nautical themed wear has never completely gone out of style, with elements of it popping up in every decade since.

Many thanks to "W.T" for sharing this vintage fashion moment with SLV.  We will have another great one for you next Thursday!

The Comeback of the Hat

Bookmark and Share

It's official, hats are back! Fall 2013 trends are beginning to surface and the hat appears to be a staple for both men and women this coming season. The 2010s have slowly moved away from the functional and athletic hat, and made a turn towards the fashion hat. With vintage being more popular than ever, SLV has also seen an increased demand in hats for the sake of creating a unique look. Vintage hats are something quite special because in previous decades hats were worn specifically for fashion!  Here is a quick overview of the hat by decade:

Early 1900's

Antique 1910s Men's Black Top Hat by Christy's of London, $55

The top hat as been in fashion for over a century and was typically an expression of fashion and class status for gentlemen. During this period hats were still predominantly thought to be for men and hats for ladies were just beginning to gain popularity. By the 1910s elaborate fashion hats for wealthy women swept the fashion world.

1920s-1930s

Vintage Pre 1930s Dunn & Co. Black Trilby Hat, $75

Hats were incredibly popular for both women and men during this period.  Hats were still used for class distinction, and of course for personal expression, however, few left their home with out a hat of some kind. Hats took on a more streamlined and modern look compared to their over the top Victorian and Edwardian predecessors.

1940s

Vintage 1940s Mr. Milton Beaded Jersey Hat, $110

The 1940s brought some interesting fashion hats. However, due to the second World War hats began to be seen as unnecessary and frivolous. The men went to war and the women began to work, so there was little time for fashion. This did bring about the currently en vouge, "Rosie the Riveter" red bandana look for women that has resurfaced myriad times since.

1950s

Vintage 1950s Baby Blue Wide Brim Hat with Feather Plume, $35

The post war boom and the expansion of the middle class rebooted the hat. Hats were worn by both men and women in casual and formal settings. Although hats were once again fashionable, they never again became required fashion as they were post-war.

1960s

Vintage Mod 1960s Black & White Felt Fedora Hat by André, $55

With the mod movement, fashion became much edgier for both women and men in the 1960s. Hats were specifically an expression of personal style. It was also during this era that Jackie Kennedy re-popularized the pillbox hat, creating a fashion frenzy and historical moment for the hat.

1970s

Hats were not unpopular in the 1970s, particularly in high fashion, with the wide brimmed floppy hat. Nonetheless, with grassroots endeavors such as the  Hippie, Civil Rights, LGBT, and Women's Liberation Movements taking over many chose to use their hair and not hats has tools of fashion expression.

1980s

Vintage 1980s Nautical Navy Blue & Gold Pillbox Hat, $24.50

The 1980s made way for hats once again. There is something to be said for 1980s hats because the reach of them is so diverse, and seen predominantly in young, casual fashion trends. Hats were not a necessity, but became gained a coolness factor that carried them into the 1990s.

1990s

1993 is now considered vintage and there is one name synonymous with early 1990s hats: Blossom. Hats were quirky and funky, and strictly for fashion's sake!

Recently we have seen the resurgence of the hat in formal fashion wear with the fascinator, post Royal Wedding. In fact here I am in one recently at a wedding.

Regardless of your personal style hats are a great way to express yourself and instantly change your look. Hats are also a fabulous way to incorporate vintage pieces into everyday fashion.  Be sure to check out our full selection of vintage hats for more style inspiration!

Throwback Thursday's with SLV

It's Throwback Thursday!  Here is a photo of my grandparents decked out in their best winter duds in the mid 1930s! Born in 1916 and 1919, Ruth and Edward made quite the fancy couple.  I just adore the details present on both coats. Neither are really posing, they had no idea that the clothes they had on would become iconic staples of 1930s fashion.

We are going to be posting photos featuring great vintage clothing every Thursday, and we would love to hear from you! Were you a disco diva or a dapper gentleman? Was your mom a Betty? Were your grandparents oh so elegant? We would love for you to share your great vintage fashion moments with us!
