My First Vintage...What Was Yours?

Bookmark and Share

When I was a young teenager, and without a regular income, money was tight. In order to purchase clothing I would shop at the Sally Ann, Goodwill and second hand stores. This was how the vintage bug began for me as I would often find something that was just so different which happened to be 40 years old!

My first vintage purchase was a WWII fitted army jacket. I was surprised at the time how small it was - at first I thought it was a child's jacket. In a sense it was, as the man who wore it was most likely just a teenager himself. The thought of a soldier's piece of clothing in my hands was almost eerie...I was fascinated, but also very emotional. What happened to this young soldier? Did he die in the war? What was his position? The jacket looked like an aviator's jacket...was he a pilot?

I was holding in my hand a little piece of history and immediately felt a connection to this young soldier. Feeling an obligation to preserve his memory, I bought the jacket and kept it wrapped and protected for years. I also wore it a few times and each time I wore it, I thought of this person and hoped I was helping his memory. I was immensely proud of this purchase and my heart felt happy.

I would love to hear about your first real vintage purchase. Did it evoke an emotional response? Why did you buy it? Do you still have it? Tell me in your comments below - let us all know! I'll leave this post up for a few days -- I think it will be interesting reading!

Kingpins are having a ball!

Bookmark and Share
Did bowling ever go out of style?  I think that the answer is both yes and no.  Adults and kids alike are continuing to don rented shoes and eager to face the potential humiliation of gutter balls.  Our friends and I still go for a few games, especially on those winter weekends when outdoor activities are out of the question.  But where is the team spirit?  Where are the matching shirts and community feel?

The sports channel occasionally airs bowling tournaments but this leisure sport isn't integrated into our daily lives as it was in the 1950's and 1960's.  When I asked "What Happened to the Jello?" in a previous blog, that question also applied to the idea of community team spirit with activities like bowling.

Well, bowling might not be as popular today, but the fashions inspired by this sport are certainly still hot and trendy.  A few years ago, bowling shoes inspired footwear were all the rage with both men and women.  The quintessential bowling shirt is like a good tie - it doesn't go out of style but shifts in design bit by bit to suit current trends.  Charlie Sheen's character on his hit television series "Two and a Half Men" seems to wear nothing but bowling shirt inspired tops.

Now group activities involve racing or fighing an avatar on your tv screen, or living vicariously as a virtual band member.  Exercise classes have been replaced with you and a screen instructor who perform a variety of workouts while balancing on a small surf board type accessory.  Get there once in a while and have some fun with your family and friends.  Lost for something to do?  Make a right and head for your local bowling alley.

Here are some vintage accessories that you might like...

The Sartorialist

The Sartorialist, Scott Schuman

Originally a blog, http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/ focuses on street style savvy fashionistas. Scott Schuman began in New York photographing people who caught his eye - but not just by the way they dressed. It was also their sense of themselves, their "l'air" or "humeur".

The blog and his photos became so popular, a collection of his photographs are now published in book form. To be released August 26th, The Sartorialist, shows hundreds of photographs from New York, Milan, Paris, Australia and Toronto (to name a few cities).

Have a look at his vintage inspired images; everyday folks who have something to say with their style.

No models were harmed in the taking of theses photographs. :-) Aren't they wonderful!
