MTM Forever...

I loved the Mary Tyler Moore show.  It ran from 1970 to 1977.  I'm not sure exactly why I liked it as I didn't physically identify with the character nor did I have ambitions to be a television producer.  Watching it in reruns I thought that the hair styles and clothing were sometimes outrageous and plain hilarious.

Despite its brown, shag interior, I loved Mary's aparment and all that it represented - single girl out in the world trying to make something of herself.  When I was watching this show, I was still deeply in my tween years and yet I loved something about Mary.  I think that Mary being the only woman surrounded by men appealed to me.  Well, she was the only one until the vixen Sue Ann Nivens came into the scene.  Then there was the air-headed Georgette who was loveable but sometimes frustrating.  Mary had such great rappore with her coworkers.  Even the surly Mr. Grant couldn't help but like her for who she was.

Mary was a soft woman with strength of steel on the inside that made itself known on those occasions when she was feeling outraged or taken advantage of by others.  She was always looking for the right man, but she felt confident in the fact that she wasn't going to beg for it or cry for it.  It would happen when the time was right.  She was like everyone's girlfriend who you wanted living next door.

I love that some of our cable company's retro channels has reruns of these older, quality shows airing for people like me.

The stories hold up. MTM is like the antidote to the "Housewives of" women - and her clothes are always great to see.

Loved this post. Mary Tyler Moore was so fascinating to me. She was so unlike any of the women around me and gave me another perspective on "womanhood." Her clothes were always intriguing too...sometimes so very professional and put together and at other times really over the top "groovy." I have a dress listed in my Etsy shop right now described as Mary Tyler Moore-ish so it was fun to read this article and know how she influenced others too. Your blog is always a great read!
