WELK-come to Family Hour

Would you be surprised if I told you that I loved watching the Lawrence Welk show?  No, I'm not a grandmother, nor the age of one.  Back in the 1970's, my family and I gathered on the sofa to watch the hourly show that was full of "champagne music".  It was such a pure, family-oriented show with great examples of singing, dancing and instrumental playing. 

If you watch it today, you might recoil from the rather scary hairstyles, the heavy make-up and strangely matching costumes.  The women were often dressed in chiffon and feathers.  The men looked somewhat dashing in their ruffled tuxedo shirts and jumbo sized shirt collars.  Powder blue was probably the most popular of all the colours both in clothing and make-up.  Because the show aired for more than 31 years, the audience got to see such a array of fashions from the early 1950's to the 1970's. 

The group seemed like a really loving family.  The music was very smooth and easy listening.  Like the Carol Burnett Show, this television program brought together our multi-generational family to watch something that exuded innocence and fun.

My husband thinks it's scary that I still remember the show's closing tune.  I still hum it in the shower.  Maybe I am supposed to be from another decade!  "Good night, sleep tight, and pleasant dreams to you,

STAYIN' ALIVE....

 Wow, what can I say about the golden age of disco during the 1970’s?  It’s hard to know just where to start. We loved it, then we made fun of it and now we love it again. Even the bell-bottom pants seem to be in fashion again. Although the die-hard fashionistas would scoff at that notion and proclaim that skinny jeans are what’s in at the moment.

Radios blared the falsetto tones of the Bee Gees and we reveled in it!  I fondly remember my aunts used to stand in front of the hall mirror practicing their best moves. The weekends were made for big hair, platform shoes and lit up dance floors to boogie the nights away.

I admit to watching “Saturday Night Fever” whenever I happen to catch it on television. I turn up  the radio whenever I hear a disco tune. It’s infectious. The songs may have been angry at times, but they had life, just like the fashions of the day. The word subtle was not in the 1970’s vocabulary. I remember being at a dance club not too long ago and the kids there half my age were belting out the lyrics to a Bay City Rollers song. That was really shocking to me. I wondered though, if they thought that “Saturday Night” was a new release hit?!

Kick Up Those Heels

Spring is around the corner. I just love this time of year when there is little or no snow left on the ground, the sun shines and we can rid ourselves of a few layers of winter wear - particularly the heavy winter boots. (Assuming you live in the winterized seasons!)

My outdoor winter wardrobe tends to favor the practical. It only makes sense in a city that has icy sidewalks and slushy lawns - those big ol' galoshes are the choice for footwear. But now as the sidewalks are bare I can pull out my high heeled boots and wear them without the fear of slipping on the ice! It is still cool enough for boots where they do not look out of place, and the safety factor is back on the streets!

Couldn't you see wearing these fantastic butterscotch boots with a great skirt right now? Time to rid ourselves of dreary pants for a bit and kick up our heels in skirts!

Chevron Saves Winter

The last kick at winter...perhaps you are tired of the season, but actually, here in Toronto, it has been very mild. Only a handful of snowfalls - certainly nothing compared to how the US east coast has been hit. We received that the year before, so I'm enjoying the break!
