Gatsby is Better Than Ever!

Bookmark and Share

Looks like we'll be entertained by another beautiful version of "The Great Gatsby" starring Leo Di Caprio.  Set for December release, this visually spectacular film will hopefully live up to the true intentions of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. You can be the judge on that one!  Hollywood is again looking to the roaring 20's as a way of showcasing the past and to hopefully revamp their somewhat sagging industry.  Directed by the always interesting Baz Luhrmann, this film is sure to be spectacular in scale.

Mossy Green Paradise in Gatsby Style

Bookmark and Share

Kate Moss was married earlier this year to Jamie Hince.  Despite what we've heard about her 'bridezilla' antics, this Gatsby inspired wedding looks absolutely gorgeous surrounded by the beauty of the English countryside.

Bride and Groom look like they belong
as part of their lush surroundings.
They look like a page out of a book
of fairy tales

Kate's delicate veil awaits her. The
headpiece is such an homage
to Gatsby style

The camera is a keyhole into the softness of the 1920's

Kate's daughter Lila Grace looks the part in her sweet
flapper inspired dress and simple ballet shoes

Love the vintage cars and all the "Geeves" men to go
along with them

This Edwardian garden set looks the part for the guests

Deco inspired vanity and stool are modern
with a nod to Kate's 1920's theme. Even
the Tiffany's style floor lamp fits right in.

Sigh...makes me want to get married again.  Just can't decide on a beautifully romantic theme like this one or just get hitched in Vegas!

A Gatsby Summer Afternoon

As a vintage dealer, I am often asked what my favorite era is. It is a difficult question to answer as there are so many variables that affect why I like certain times in history. It is not just a fashion look or style, but also a way of life, societal beliefs and morals, feminist constrictions or liberties, familial lifestyle .... many factors contribute to preferring one era over another.
But one in particular often stands out. That is the Art Deco era...or the style of F. Scott Fitzgerald, well-known for his novel, The Great Gatsby.

So it is fitting that the Art Deco Society of California takes us back to "The Gatsby Summer Afternoon" event every year. Held on the beautiful lawns of the Dunsmuir Hellman Historic Estate, it is a picnic re-creating elegant afternoons as Jay Gatsby or F. Scott and Zelda would have held.

There are strict requirements for picnicking at this event and it is detailed in the "How to Gatsby Guide".  For example, no plastic or Styrofoam plates, no denim, miniskirts or sneakers. Ladies must wear hats, gloves and jewelery. Well, all I can say is "how wonderfully sophisticated"!

For more reading head over to Collector's Weekly and The Art Deco Society.
