Beauty is only skin deep?

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  I say that's hogwash.  This overquoted expression might be true if the beholder could see a person's heart and mind before what is presented on the outside.  But human beings are by nature visual people - especially the male species.  That doesn't make men more shallow, it's just that men process information differently than women.

I was wondering about the validity of beauty pageants today.  When I was little, my mom and I used to watch the Miss Universe pageant every year.  It always seemed like Venezuelan women won the top prize more often than contestants from any other country.

beauty pageant 1 Beauty Pageants: Bridging The Gap Between The Genders? These days, most people seem to scoff at the notion of parading oneself in skimpy swim suits just to win a prize for physical appearance.  Sponsors like Donald Trump have tried to make these pageants more meaningful and appealing by attaching them to lucrative endorsements and promises of higher education.  Positive marketing has focused on the notion of empowering women, not demeaning them.

I'm not sure which way to think.  I'm with the Spice Girls when they shout out "girl power", but I also think that some of these young women could certainly benefit from the monetary prizes and the opportunity for higher education.

I'll leave it up to you readers to express your opinions.  I was just having an Arsenio Hall moment with index finger to temple thinking "hmmmm....."

Interesting topic. My best friend from high school recently sent me some old pictures of boys we went to school with that we thought were the hottest. I look at those pictures and those boys look so ordinary to me today. My taste has changed for what I find attractive.

I also do not consider myself "beautiful," but my grooming and style I believe makes me attractive. I have more attention from men of all ages at age 44 than I did at age 21. I believe a big part of it is confidence and attitude.

My friend told me a trick once, she said "If you believe you have the tastiest treat, everyone else will believe that too." Beauty is so much more than appearance. It is a package of looks, style, attitude, and personality.
