Color Blind?

Bookmark and Share

I have a confession to make - I'm really bad at picking color names. I often need help to describe the color of my vintage items and turn to a color thesaurus. Even then, with the thousands of shades and names available, it can get quite overwhelming!

Here is an example. The color red. It's not just red but....
Cherry Red
Scarlet Red
Fire Engine Red
Free Speech Red
Sangria Red
Dark Red
Maroon
Fire Brick Red
Venetian Red
and on and on.....

So you can imagine the difficulty I have with red, the glare of photographing and choosing the color that describes it well. Here are some red dresses I recently acquired.

See what I mean? So forgive me if I default to Red. It's still stunning in a vintage dress, no matter what you call it.

Reverse This

We do not see much in the way of reversible clothing today. It tends to be restricted to mostly travel clothing so as to help one pack and travel light. But at one time, reversible clothing was much more common as consumers would prefer getting more bang from their buck when purchasing or having a garment custom made. It also lessened the number of times something needed to be cleaned and therefore extended the life of a piece of clothing.

Reversible clothing is exactly that. Turn something inside out and voila! A new outfit.

Double duty clothing is ingenious, unique, well-constructed and doubles your wardrobe instantly. I would love to see it re-emerge. However, because it requires more fabric, I highly doubt it will make a big comeback. Clothes are cheap and often cheaply made today...so a reversible coat for instance, is more of an investment piece.

Take these vintage items for example:

This couture silver metallic gown has a reversible cape. How perfect! A different look, but just in case you spill a little something on your cape, turn it inside out and no one will ever know. Currently available for $75.

It excites my vintage heart when such thought is put into pattern matching, color complements and longevity of a garment. Say, isn't that what vintage is all about?

Seeing Red

With the holiday season here, I can't help but delight in the color of red. I have decorated the Christmas tree in silver and red, bought a new (vintage, of course) red sweater, red purse, pair of red mitts and am drinking more red wine. :-)

I love red and the many ranges of emotions that accompany it.

When you want to stand out in a crowd, wear red.
When you want to feel powerful, wear red.
If you are in China, wear red for prosperity.
If you have been married for 40 years, wear a red ruby.
Surprise someone with the red carpet treatment.
When you feel like partying, paint the town red.
When you are in a hurry, take a red eye flight.
Watch for red flags to warn of danger.
Seeing red? You must be angry.
Red is joyful, like Christmas.

Hope you enjoy my red picks, all now available.
