Lucite in the Sky With Diamonds

Lucite is a term for plastic. Specifically, it was DuPont's name for an acrylic resin that they developed, which when molded into a purse, can create some stunning accessories - works of art really!

Stylish Groceries

With the big push to eliminate plastic bags from our landfills, a surge of new and funky shopping bags have surfaced. This is not a new concept. I remember traveling in Europe as a teenager and admiring the lovely shopping bags people would carry their groceries home in. I had to have one and still have the fantastic red and black plaid shopping carry-all to this day, that I bought in Prague. I receive compliments on it all the time!

Unfortunately, in order to replace all those plastic bags, manufacturers are churning out tons of new products claiming environmentally friendly totes. While the bags may be made of friendlier materials, the energy put into producing them contradicts the point of being environmentally friendly.

So why not go vintage instead? I found this bag at American Vintage and thought it would be a great shopping tote. From the 1950s, it is clear plastic with a gold and blue abstract design, and in excellent condition. $26 now available.

Sophisticated Lunch

Do you take your lunch to work or school? Do you dish out big bucks and buy your lunch every day? Most of us do a little of both, but I absolutely refuse to put my lunch in a paper bag.

My niece is very particular about her lunch bag. It's Hannah Montana all the way, but bless the little girl, the thermos must match the insulated lunch bag which matches her knapsack. A girl after my own heart!

While I can forgo the Hannah Montana tchochkes, I wouldn't mind carrying my lunch in this fabulous bag. It could be a purse, but couldn't you see placing your lovely victuals and snacks in this? Beats a paper bag any day.

I've found a great auction website that will host my little silent auctions all in the name of charity! In case some of you don't know, 10% of all my sales (website, ebay, etsy) are donated to local women's shelters here in Toronto. Large Petit Point Purse, c. 1960s

Vintage soft fabric purse with floral petit point design on front and back. Double soft fabric handles, gold tone large size frame and kissing clasp. Lined in black fabric, one zippered pocket on back. No makers label and in excellent condition.

Size Matters!

Have you ever "tried on a purse"? Just like a piece of clothing, a purse needs to fit the body it is hanging next to. Wearing the wrong style, size or shape for your body type can be very unflattering. The part of the body that the purse rests on will be where the eye is drawn to.

Here are some tips.

If you are slim and tall like a model, you can pretty much wear any style purse. But, be careful of too small a size. Small bags will make you appear larger.

If you are short and petite keep in mind the proportion. Smaller bags should be chosen and worn close to the body.

If your hips are large you want to draw attention away from that area. Wear a shoulder bag with a short strap so the purse rests under the arm and above the hip.

If you are top heavy you will probably want to draw attention away from your bosom or waist. Use a fairly large shoulder bag with a long strap.

If you have great curves try a shoulder bag that ends just above the waist to accentuate your curves. Avoid ones that are either really big or really small.

If you are a plus size use a purse that is wider in width, like a hobo style. A small bag will make you look larger. Go for bags with short to medium length straps.

And please, avoid carrying something so large that it looks like luggage! Unless of course you are going to the airport.
