1920s Wrap Coat and Its New Home

I love when customers send me photos of their purchases from my store. Photos of them wearing my vintage garments and how fantastic they always look!

It's wonderful to see someone's interpretation of a vintage piece. Take this fabulous 1920s wrap coat that was a stellar garment garnering a ton of interest and requests to buy. This is going to be a plug for a fellow writer.  A friend of mine forwarded me a blog and I thought it was so fabulous that I had to write about it and the subject matter.  So all of the following images are from "Habitually Chic". 

At the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, there is an exhibit of Sonia Delaunay's works.  She was primarily an abstract painter who has had a hand in many types of projects such as graphics, theatre and film, interiors and textiles.  This exhibit focuses on her designs from the 1920's. 

    

    

     

    

It's hard to believe that such vibrant colours and vivid patterns can be associated with roaring 20's fashions.  It's nice to see that this visionary woman could feel free to be so bold.

Sonia Delaunay's works are on view until June 5th.  I would love to take a big bite of the big apple and stroll through this amazing exhibit sometime soon.

The 20s Are A Perfect 10

Hidden in the deep recesses of my nearly finished basement, is a cupboard under the stairs that doesn’t house Harry Potter, but a 1920’s inspired flapper dress.  I made it ages ago out of an old sundress and lamp fringe.  This item would never be on sale at Some Like it Vintage or anywhere else vintage wear is featured; but I have been loath to discard it.  There is something special about that little dress. Perhaps it is because of the many hours I toiled with a needle and thread to make it as cute and as authentic as possible for a Halloween party.  I think the real reason is that just by looking at it sitting lonely on its hanger, I can hear the Charleston and my usually rhythm-deprived feet start moving to those sounds playing like an old movie in my head.

The Roaring 20’s are the stuff of tall tales and Hollywood movies.  I can just picture it - gangsters with Tommy guns slung casually over their impeccable, pinstriped suits, swaggering to impress.  Hip-swinging flapper girls with their glittery, fringed dresses popping their gum, just leaning by a bar to pretty up a joint.  It’s The Great Gatsby, Bugsy Malone, an old episode of Star Trek, Singing in the Rain, Chicago etc.  One gangster was fighting another for “a piece of the action”.

I treasure my little dress with its vintage appeal so that I can feel a part of that action and live vicariously through those old movies.

When I grow up...

As collecting, buying and selling vintage becomes more and more popular, there is an abundance of vintage clothing sellers to choose from. More now than ever, and the competition is fierce let me tell you!

However, there is one store in particular that I love. When I first toyed with the idea of selling my collection online, I visited Vintage Textile and fell in love. It is not the website that is particularly trendy, or colorful for that matter, but the quality of this fine lady's garments are something to behold. She was my inspiration and continues to be to this day. I want to be like Vintage Textile when I grow up.

Double-Duty Clips

A dress clip is one of those vintage accessories which is simply not used enough today. Popular from the 1920s -1950s, pairs of dress clips were often mounted on removable pin-back frames so they could be worn together as a brooch as well as separately. I just love double duty accessories!

A dress clip was used in various ways- as a quick update to a dress, or often to accent one's neckline. Worn for a symmetrical or A-symmetrical look, many styles of dresses needed a weight to accent the decolletage.

The dress clip is worn to one side to softly gather the dress for an asymmetrical look.

My Vintage Vogue

The next best thing to looking at a fabulous vintage garment, is looking at stunning vintage photographs.
