Most auction house experts say that the vintage market has been historically volatile. Vintage does not follow traditional market trends like other commodities such as gold. Rare will always garner attention, whereas the so-called 'middle of the road' items tend to be less desirable. Mid-century designs are in that category regardless of the fact that its fashions and interiors are driving the markets to a frenzied high.
What do these experts say are good vintage investments? Keep your eyes peeled for Pucci, Balmain, Dior, Givenchy, Chanel. These design houses tend for more classic lines, making them timeless and easily collectible.
What about designers who are worth investing in, who are not yet in the same league? You would be surprised by what the experts consider 'lesser known'. Names like Oscar De La Renta, Valentino, Halston, Bill Blass are becoming more and more known for their vintage and retro inventory.
What about us mere mortals? None of these flashy names are within our reach. If you see anything from Pedro Rodriguez or Pauline Trigere, grab them! Why them? Perhaps they seem more exotic to younger vintage enthusiasts.
Whether you buy them to wear, for investment sake or ..., vintage is a big part of our lives whether we realise it not, whether we love it or not.
