We just finished watching the Australian Open Tennis tournament. As a girl with a strong hand in the vintage industry, I have often thought that sports wear has a place in the time lines of fashions. I think that the 2 most stylish current tennis players are Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova. They both sport custom Nike gear that are heads and shoulders above the other players.

Image and product placement have become very important elements of today's sports. Endorsements from athletes is not a new concept, but it's more prominent than in decades past.

Back in the 1970's, there was much less emphasis on style, rather practicality and appropriateness for the event. You can still see the company logo, but it's subtle, not demanding to be in the forefront of an athlete's identity. It was in this decade that bright colours were introduced to the uniforms by way of headbands and shirt designs. This was a direct result of fans complaining that the usual bland colours made it difficult to distinguish between players.

In the early 20th century, tennis players were indistinguishable from Cricket players. The men were very warmly and formally dressed in white, flannel trousers, white shirts and v-neck cable knit sweaters. How they could play a very active sport dressed in this manner, boggles the mind!

This player looks like he was on his way to the country club rather than looking like an elite athlete at a top level tournament. And at this angle, I don't see any product branding.

Today, some of the labels have become literally larger than life,dominating the shirt front of a player, chair umpire, lines person and ball kids. Polo Ralph Lauren was one of the first sponsors to really shake up their polo pony brand by oversizing it.

Lacoste has also jumped on the bandwagon by enlarging their alligator symbol, which hasn't changed in colour or design in many decades. It looks like the mouth of the beast is going for this model's underarm!

I like that the sport of tennis continues to be very compelling with talented athletes from around the world. But in our current world of commercialism, there is a secondary battle going on during every match - the battle of the brands.

My alligator can eat your pony! No way! My pony can stomp on your alligator! No Way! Grrrrrrr!

OH, The Weather Outside is......?

As much as I dislike living through the cold winters of Toronto, I must admit that this winter has been milder and stranger than usual. One day I need rain boots and an umbrella, then the very next day I need winter boots and my long fur-lined coat. The snow comes, then gets washed away by rain. Then the snow comes again. This has been the season's strange pattern. I could look at this annoying or as an opportunity to shop vintage, make more use out of "in-between" stylish outerwear that usually get worn only a couple of times from fall to winter, then winter to spring:

My mum just got back from a whirlwind trip to the western United States. One of her favourite destinations was Las Vegas. OK, hang on here. My 70 something mother got to experience the city of sin before me! I'm so jealous!

Call me cheesy, but next to 'Ol Blue Eyes and the King of Rock-n-Roll, I associate Vegas with the eternally young, or shall I describe his as looking now like "the living embalmed" crooner Wayne Newton.

Husband lives in fear of having to endure one of Newton's concerts if we do make it to Las Vegas. I love the idea of someone who has been a fixture of a town that is constantly trying to outdo itself with flashier lights, bigger casinos, fattier buffets and more grandiose hotels.

By the time Wayne Newton was 6 years old, he had sung for a President, toured with the Grand Ole Opry and recorded his first album. Amazing for a pint sized kid with big dreams.

Fast forward many decades and he is still thrilling audiences old and young around the world. With a big boost from Jack Benny, Newton became the mega Vegas star he is today. He has also acted in many Hollywood films and television shows.

Most of his contemporaries have come and gone. So I"m glad that the ever tanned looking Newton is still going strong. Admittedly I wouldn't buy a CD of his unless it was his old material. And there was something magical about Ferris Bueller lip syncing to "Dankeschön" on that parade float.

Have you ever dreamed of being a vintage pin-up girl? I couldn't see myself doing a photo shoot in today's style as I am not supermodel material. But a session like the above photo could be really fun. I could feel like an old fashioned pin-up girl. A couple of decades back, the concept of 'glamour shots' was really popular. Soft Star Trek-like back lit portraits of women in their very best evening wear were displayed proudly in many homes. I never thought that was for me. I'm too camp, too cheesy and theatrical for something so sober and conservative.

However, shots like these, I could definitely envision. I would love to be a slightly sexy Donna Reed or maybe Mrs. Cleaver with a little animal instinct!

I love the idea of this type of photography as becoming the subject doesn't mean having to workout at a gym for 6 months to prepare. I could be a flapper girl doing the Charleston or a sweater girl from the 1950's listening to the juke box. Maybe I'm a flower power girl at a mod disco. The possibilities are endless, limited only by the imagination. So go out there and have some fun. It doesn't have to be a Valentines Day or anniversary gift. Do it for yourself.

It's All In The Details

You know another reason I like vintage clothing? The attention to detail in constructing a garment. We are all familiar with the manufacturing process of mass made clothing - cheap fabrics, loose and missing stitches, no hemlines. All of the modern way of clothing manufacturing is to get as many pieces from one bolt of fabric as possible. This often means cutting corners and shoddy work.

Take this 1950s cotton dress. Simple in it's design, it's the cut of the fabric that is unique. There is no sewn hemline, rather the skirt was cut from the finished end of the fabric - what you would never see done today as that would be an incredible waste of fabric and loss to profits. All the dresses made from this lot were probably cut that way - costing the manufacturer a little more money perhaps, but well worth the finished product.

Just another reason to love vintage fashion!

POP! Goes the Wardrobe!

As an owner of a an online vintage clothing company, my world is virtually virtual. My gigabytes are my highway to customers and my storefront is my Homepage. So I've become more and more intrigued with the pop-up shops concept in North America.

I've toyed with the idea of a business with brick and mortar, putting down permanent roots to a homebase where my interactions would be you in the flesh, not just you in an email.

On the other hand, I've become more intrigued with a best of both worlds solution. There is an increase in popularity of pop-up vintage shops for people who have a passion for vintage clothing and accessories who wish to set up temporary displays of their merchandise. This allows for low overhead costs and each event can be treated as a joyful celebration as opposed to the potential tedium of hanging about waiting for that next person to walk through my door. Some people plan for monthly pop-up shops, allowing for that build-up of excitement among their friends and past customers.

Right now I'm considering all options. I am as always thankful for your business and continued interest. I love what I do and being completely immersed in my vintage and retro world. I was watching a recent episode of the television show "Pan Am" when I noticed that Christina Ricci's character was wearing a deadly, pointy bra. In fact all the women were wearing bras that would make an 80's Madonna quite proud!

Why were their bosoms like pyramids?! Well-formed ladies from the 1960's wanted to emulate current sirens such as Lana Turner and Jane Russell by wearing the very popular, conical supports popularly known as the bullet bra. The previous decade was the start of women wanting to look Hollywood glamorous. They had been deprived from the war and depression years so it was time to celebrate being a woman and enjoying some luxuries that were becoming available. Every woman wanted to look like the pin-up sweater girls.

I must say though that these poor women must have been feeling constant discomfort until more comfortable fabrics such as nylon replaced the corset-like contraptions. They were also easier to wash.

It's amazing that the silhouette of a woman can so easily determine from which era she derives. I must say that these 1960's women with such upturned bras, look so unnatural. This pointy style also allowed smaller breasted women to feel boosted. My underwire bras have been good to me!

The bullet bra went out of style in the 1960's as underwire designs came into vogue with softer fabrics and more natural looking profiles. I'm grateful for our current "support systems" but I am still in awe of gorgeous women like Marilyn Monroe who sported the bullet with flair.

Hi my name is Carol and I'm a guest blogger for today. I'm the Twinkie who wrote about Korean Christmas traditions. This time I wanted to tell you myself about our fab summer trip to the U.K. I know that Veronica has mentioned me to you in the past. Yes, that was me who took photos of the Missoni hotel and vintage stores in Edinburgh and Dublin.

I can honestly say that before our day trip to Glasgow, I wasn't that much of a fan of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. I felt that his work was rigid, impractical and sort of boring. I always thought that his furniture designs are similar to Frank Lloyd Wright's in style. I once flipped a Wright chair over and it wouldn't sit straight after that! I was one scared university student on her first trip to a Wright house.

Mackintosh was a native Glaswegian who is renowned for his accomplishments in Architecture, watercolour art, furniture and textiles designs. He was a key figure of Art Nouveau in the United Kingdom and designer in the Arts and Crafts movement.

When we arrived at Glasgow, I had no idea that this city lives in such reverence to Mackintosh. His designs and Art Nouveau flair are felt and seen throughout on its street signs, architecture and even advertising posters. He was everywhere, especially his rose motif.

We stopped for lunch at "The Willow Tea Rooms" in the heart of the city. It was jointly designed by Mackintosh and his wife. The space was cozy with very tall chair backs that made each table setting feel very cozy, warm and comfortable. It was a welcome and delicious getaway from the cold, bleak weather outside that day.

We also visited the Glasgow Fine Art School, which was designed by Mackintosh. We were too late for the building tour, but we had a lot of fun in the gift shop where there was everything Mackintosh that the heart could desire.

The local museum also had a Mackintosh wing which featured a lot of his chairs and other furniture items.

At the end of a tiring but fun day, I came to the realization that some things need to be seen in context to be fully appreciated. I quickly became an admirer of this modest Scotsman. Contrary to popular belief, a rose by any other name just isn't the same.

The Beauty of 1920s Lingerie

I love, love, love lingerie. So my excitement is growing with my huge collection that I recently acquired. This beautiful black silk 1920s envelope chemise is delicate, sexy and beautiful.

1920s lingerie needed to change to accommodate the shorter dress styles. The envelope chemise (a.k.a. camiknickers) showed up around 1910 and is what we may call today, the teddy. A one piece undergarment which is a combination of a camisole and panties - typically looser and will attach at the crotch. No need to wear anything else :-) Ahh, imagine the freedom from corsets if you were a gal in the 1920s!

Skinny is a Bad Word

Throughout history the female figure has had a hard time. Keeping up with fashions we have been squished into corsets, told to lose weight, told to gain weight, sit with your legs crossed, wear high heels to show off your gambs, cinch the waist, push up the girls, separate the girls, make the girls flat, wear a bra, don't wear a bra.......

whew...it's exhausting keeping up!

I'm particularly fascinated by the idea of weight. What is deemed flattering in one generation is not in the next. Rotund women in the renaissance were beautiful, today they are fat. Flapper girls were thin and flat chested, 1950s women were curvy, 60s women emulated twiggy and all had bad posture, and waif like nymphs were the 1990s. Now we have toned yoga bodies with muscle abs - think Victoria Secret models.

Retronaut found some great ads for how to 'gain' weight in the mid century. Yes, you heard right - gaining weight was in, skinny was out. However, note that the ads do not really discuss healthy weight. It's all how to catch a man, be popular and get noticed.

Still the wrong message and unfortunately, I'm not convinced it has changed much. Yes, the design of the most wanted body type is lean, muscular and supposedly healthy incorporating dietary changes and an active lifestyle. I'm all for that. However, watching the pre Victoria Secret annual runway show, some of the models described how they get ready for the show. Similar to a body builder competition, at this point they are most unhealthy. The immense weight and nutrition loss before a competition or runway show is unhealthy. The models subsist on water and celery, the body builders fast. This see-saw action contradicts what their bodies are trying to show us.

But I digress, as I often do!

Have a look at some of these vintage ads and judge for yourself. As I maintain, being a vintage gal in today's era lets us choose the best of the past. And I'll choose to keep my figure at a healthy weight, stay active, eat foods I enjoy and if that 1950s dress doesn't fit me - so be it. I will find something else.

The piano shawl is an elaborate and beautifully embroidered decorative piece of fabric, usually with long fringe trim, used to drape over the flat surface of a grand piano. Serving to protect the piano from nicks and scratches, they are not generally meant to be worn as they are quite large.

The heavy embroidery and fringe create significant weight to hold the shawl in place and prevent sliding around. They reached their height of popularity during the Victorian Era when a parlor piano was often seen in affluent homes.

Piano shawls are very much sought after pieces, particularly from the late 1800s to early 1900s. Smaller versions were adapted for women to wear - less heavy but just as beautiful. I had a stunning hand knotted one recently which was intricately knotted throughout.

I have exciting news! I have procured a very large collection of pre 1930s fashions from a local collector here in Toronto. I am slowly going through the 16 boxes of amazing vintage clothing, many items dating back to 1880.

I can't tell you how fabulous this is for a vintage dealer - I feel like I hit the jackpot. Stay tuned dear readers as I list some extraordinary items in the coming weeks and months.

This first piece is a 1920s wool wrap coat. Significant outerwear for women in the 1920s, these coats often have a beautiful focus of an extra large button to wrap or close on the sides. This stunning dark brown patterned coat has wool weaved trim and large collar. No sooner did I list it than a customer from the UK bought it. I know it is going to a great new home!

Ride The Nostalgia Train

During December, the MTA in New York brought back the Nostalgia Train. A 1920s original train, customers who have the opportunity to ride the vintage train were transported back in time to the Prohibition era with authentic details such as rattan seats, ceiling fans and drop sash windows.

The train ran only during the holiday season, so sorry if this post is late and you didn't know - neither did I! What fun this must have been! Folks donned their vintage fashions and rode the subway. Have a look :-)

This year we're excited about attending a 1980's theme New Year's Eve party. It will be hard to focus on the preparations as so many inspirations come to mind.

For my hair, I'll dig out my old banana clip, which I saved for 'just in case'. I don't know why it went out of style in the first place. I have layered, curly hair, so a vertically designed hair implement is the perfect thing. Then I thought about going with an off-the-shoulder cut-off "Flashdance" look or a layered net top or maybe go in a preppy direction with a collar raised Polo shirt.

As for a bottom, I know that it'll involve leg warmers, which are quite fashionable these days. Hey - what about the "Mork and Mindy" rainbow suspenders? Wish I had kept my perfectly fitting stone washed jeans. Oh well, I may opt for skinny jeans to go under the leg warmers.

I'll have to go either pastel preppy or "Echo and the Bunnymen" New Wave. Lucky for me, John Hughes has been such a huge influence that preparing for this party will be like channelling his spirit.

As for accessories, I'll have to have dangly sort of plastic earrings that are very colourful or the rock and roll skull motif. If there isn't a snow storm, footwear would ideally be leather topsiders (with carefully coiled lace ends) or trendy cockroach killers.

I'm very happy to be a guest blogger today. Veronica has asked me to talk about Christmas traditions from my point of view of someone who is Korean born and raised in Canada.

I came to live in Toronto just before my 7th birthday, back in the early 1970's. That means I still had a lot of childish notions and ideas about Christmas. Sure we had Santa in East Asia, we called him Grandpa Santa (if you look at the direct translation). Sure we gave out gifts to family and friends. But the similarities basically ended there. There was no such thing as sending a letter of my hopes and desires to the North Pole. Lists were never made nor acknowledged.

Koreans also had no clue (and still do not seem to) about the idea of gifts being surprises and wrapping them in secret to put under a decorated tree. To this day, the older generation of my family still insist on giving "envelopes" as that's just easier than fighting crowds of people only to get there and realise they had no clue what to get anyway as there are no lists! Money is also held in such high regard - well I suppose that is true of most cultures and societies.

So if you think about it, the whole idea of the wedding registry is quite a puzzling notion to Koreans as well. One of my favourite depictions of Korean culture at work is an episode of the "Gilmore Girls" when the character Lane - a Korean banana (yellow on the outside and white on the inside) got married.

We had our version of the tooth fairy as well. But typical of Asian work ethic, I had to really work for my supper, or in this case, work for my money. This particular tradition greatly favoured my mother as when my teeth began to fall out one by one, I had to throw them onto the roof of my house in order to successfully send the message to the fairy that I "had proof need dough"! Of course being very young, I was never successful in my attempts, so my pockets stayed empty. OK, I am digressing...

Now many decades since my migration to Canada, I have found myself evolved into a Twinkie (another example of yellow on the outside, white on the inside), as bemoaned by John Cho's character in the first "Harold and Kumar" movie. I am married to a Canadian man and I'm very comfortable with the Western traditions of Christmas as we celebrate with his immediate and extended families. But as Christmas approaches, I think about my family gatherings. It always feels a bit awkward, as the older generation have somewhat embraced Western ways, but how we celebrate now is a hybrid of East meets West. There are still a lot of envelopes somewhat under the artificial tree, but now there are also prettily wrapped gifts and this year, we implemented the Kris Kringle system. I can let you know on December 26th, if that was a great idea or if it went up in flames!

They say that when 2 people come together in marriage, they bring with them each of their family traditions. And as a unit, some of these traditions are upheld, modified and new elements added in to make them their own. The same principles apply to cultures that blend into each other. To say that they are "clashing" sends out a negative tone. I'd like to think that we're all a happy world and differences can be fun and interesting, not obstacles to bear.

Native Trends Pissing Off Real Native Americans

Lisa over at collector's weekly sent this article my way. Offering food for though and great debate, the current (and often recycled) trend of 'Native' fashion is sending out a few sparks.

"....many Native Americans are less than thrilled that this so-called “native look” is trendy right now. The company that’s stirred up the most controversy so far is Urban Outfitters, which offered a “Navajo” line this fall (items included the “Navajo Hipster Panty” and “Navajo Print Fabric Wrapped Flask”) before the Navajo Nation sent the company a cease and desist order that forced it to rename its products. Forever 21 and designer Isabel Marant also missed the memo that the tribe has a trademark on its name; thanks to the Federal Indian Arts and Crafts act of 1990, it’s illegal to claim a product is made by a Native American when it is not."

THE SOUND OF CHRISTMAS?

One of the things I look forward to during the Christmas season is tuning in to see the "Sound of Music". It has become a big holiday tradition but this legendary movie has nothing to do with Yuletide. So why is it aired at this time of the year?

Don't get me wrong, I can watch the Julie Andrews classic anytime, anywhere. But I've recently wondered why the networks have decided to associate this amazing film with Christmas. There is no meaningful message from an Austrian Santa nor is there a Grinch who is actually a good Nazi telegram delivery boy in disguise. And the very cute Cindy Loo-Who isn't little Gretl in disguise.

I suppose that the holidays are for families to join together in harmony. One way to do that is to watch a classic movie on television. I now own the DVD, but I haven't removed it from its wrapping and still prefer to catch it on TV. I remember all the years I sat with my family singing along as if we were at an annual "sing-along" show that was so popular a few years ago.

The movie was set in pre world war 2 time, the people of Germany were so brainwashed by Adolf Hitler. It was filmed in the 1960's, it's producers having no clue about the movie's incredible impact on world audiences. I was lucky enough to see the great Christopher Plummer perform in "Caesar and Cleopatra". I also saw him recently sitting near us for a different show at the same venue. He has gone one to to do many memorable roles, but to me, Plummer will always be the dashing Captain Von Trapp.

We are born into some wonderful family traditions. As we get older, leave the nests and make our own with future life partners, there is no reason why those same family traditions can't continue and even grow into something even better.

FASHION TELEVISION GOES VINTAGE

Most of us know the face of "Fashion Television". Jeanne Beker has been the host for many, many years. She has rubbed shoulders with all the greats and the not so greats in the world of fashion, art and architecture. So I find it interesting that she writes for a major Toronto newspaper, focusing a lot on vintage fashions.

This week's article focuses on a young girl Beker ran into recently at a Grace Kelly inspired fashion show at the Ritz, in honour of the Kelly exhibit here in Toronto. This girl is a good friend of Beker's daughter and the FT host has become inspired by her fashion sense and her love of her grandmother's vintage clothing.

Not surprising is the fact that this young woman has been inspired by the look of Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "Roman Holiday". Sampliner also gets her inspirations from a Parisian stylist who has 1920's flair.

Chasing fashionistas around the world means that Beker is living mostly in the future of fashion, reporting on lines that are usually 2 or more seasons ahead. But she seems to be very comfortable in the world of vintage. I find this somewhat surprising, but a good surprise. Beker says to be brave when it comes to vintage wear, but don't overdo it as it can look like you're draped in costume.

I say this again. To appreciate or to understand our present and future, we must look to the past for inspiration. Looks like Beker is doing just that! Check out her articles in the Life section of the Toronto Star.

I hope that some of you remember a blog I posted sometime last year entitled "What Happened To The Jello"? Well, I figured out the answer to that somewhat rhetorical question. A few years ago, a neighbour of ours made a layered Jello dessert that was the hit of the party. I had always had that in mind. This year, when we were asked to bring a dessert item to a Christmas party, I thought that this might be the perfect opportunity to try and reproduce this fun and colourful (not to mention) retro food.

We decided to test out the seemingly simple, (but very difficult to execute correctly) recipe, when we attended our little neighbour's birthday party last weekend. We did the layers in red, purple, yellow and white to suit the girly occasion. I have to admit to some tense moments and some arguing with the Husband. It became almost an engineering exercise in making sure the pan was level, the fridge was level, the counter top was level, the floor, the foundations of the house were level and so on and so on! Well, the final result was slightly uneven in some places, colours bled onto other colours. But the kids and adults loved it!

This past Saturday was the real test for our retro concoction. We alternated between red and green with white in between to suit the festive occasion. At first we sat in the kitchen, listening to the timer ticking away, poised and stirred and ready for the next layer to be carefully poured on. But then we decided that a watched timer doesn't ding, so we got caught up on some of our recorded television shows during the process.

The end result was just like the picture at the top of the page. There were oooohs and aaaaahhh and most were suitable impressed. We felt proud of our cool creation. It was by far the most Christmasy food item at the party.

Why have I been typing away about a simple Jello dessert? I love the idea of taking something so simple and even child-like and turning it into something really special. That's the way I look at vintage and retro. We can take an amazing piece of clothing and wear it as is, or layer it with other things to really stand out in a crowd. So what happened to the Jello? We transformed it from lumps of colourful coal to shining and wiggly diamonds!

I find that new year's eve is a time of reflection of all that has happened this year and thinking about what we hope will happen in the year to come. There is a new exhibit in our city celebrating the life of Grace Kelly. When we were on our honeymoon, we spent a week in the south of France. I remember driving along the windy roads of Monte Carlo and thinking about how Grace Kelly died there so tragically. I could understand how a car could so easily go off course. That day the world lost an incomparable actress, a beautiful princess and a devoted wife of a man who was worthy of her. Theirs was the story of fairy tales and dreams.

This exhibit will feature rarely seen treasures such as vintage couture, her classic Kelly bag, stunning jewellery and her famous gown from the Academy Awards. This is an opportunity to go inside the brief life of the actress and Princess.

I imagine that one of the reasons that Will and Kate's wedding was so embraced by the world was because it reminded us of the Grimaldi wedding. Even Kate's dress was often compared to the one worn by Kelly to her Prince Rainier. At the height of her acting career, Grace Kelly gave up her Hollywood life to become a real life princess in the Principality of Monaco. What a shame that she was taken from us so soon.

The Tender Trap

While watching the movie, "The Tender Trap" starring Frank Sinatra and Debbie Reynolds, I was reminded of why I love vintage clothing, but not necessarily vintage ways.

Being a modern and very independent woman, there are often moments in old movies that make me cringe. In this movie in particular, the Debbie Reynolds character insists that a woman is unfulfilled unless married with children and living in the perfect house. After of course, the proper courtship with perfect romantic evenings spent gazing into each other's eyes under a peach tree. Frank Sinatra must bring candy and flowers, meet her parents and sit at the end of the couch. All the while Debbie Reynolds plans to reform his ways, make a man of him and eventually get married.

Whew, that's a lot of work for a man! Something this woman does not agree with. My apologies if any of my dear readers disagree with me...but while I love watching old movies, I need to keep an open mind. Times have changed and I for one am happy that we are embracing the fashions of the past. But let's just keep it to the fashion's shall we?

According to the plot line, a woman at age 33 has slim pickin's when it comes to finding a man. She is considered old. Well if she's old, I must be dead.There are apparently not a lot of worse things that can happen to a woman at that age. Notice how no one mentions a man at that age. This is where my woman power comes to the fore and gets a little annoyed. Double standards were rampant then, yet they still exist today - but that's another post! This is a convenient time capsule and a pleasant enough movie, but extremely dated!

Enjoy the fashions from 1955. (by the way, the Hollywood ending prevails - they get married and live happily ever after)

Last year I wrote about a beloved homemade flapper dress costume. When I was a teenager, one of my best friends gave me this necklace, which I've always worn with the dress as it had the perfect 1920's style. I know that it's costume jewellery but I thought I would try and research the style and see if it was copied from a vintage choker.

I found many that are similar in style, all from the same era. With the stiffness of the Victorian time behind them, the roaring 20's introduced higher hemlines and lower necklines, that was perfect for fun sparkly jewellery to be prominently displayed.

In the 1920's, ladies' fashions became more casual and sporty. This new style did not suit the formal nature of precious stones. The Art Nouveau movement also shifted people's focus from high cost to whatever was aesthetically pleasing. These trends lead the way to the growing popularity of semi-precious and costume jewellery.

Pearls seemed to the stars of these chokers. This pretty product of the sea was the symbol of wealth and prestige, but new innovations allowed for pearls to be more accessible to the masses. Most of the "common" women in the 1920's wore faux pearls which became synonymous with Flappers.

I'm fairly certain that my necklace is a 1980's reproduction, but I've worn it on many occasions and it makes me think of my friend who now lives far away. The piece isn't vintage but it was certainly vintage inspired.

Christmas season is right around the corner. I'm already thinking about this year's colours. Yes, I am one of those people who likes to change schemes and themes when decorating. Husband thinks it's all a bit crazy and wishes I'd just stick to the traditional green and red. Speaking of traditional, I was thinking about the "most of Christmas past"....

Back in elementary school days, my good friend Sue and her family had a very artificial looking silver Christmas tree. It was only about 5 feet tall and aesthetically had no connection to nature. But they loved that tree and I was invited many times for its holiday dressings. That got me thinking about how decorations have changed through the years. We don't normally think about a Christmas tree being "trendy". However, there was a certain style to retro decorating.

Remember the "tinsel" that was heavily draped on our trees back in the 1960's and 1970's? Why don't we do that anymore. What happened to that shiny decoration? Why did we overdo it so much? It looks like the tree is melting into the shag carpet!

It seems like back in the days of retro cool, it was very trendy to use holiday colours that were bright and cheerful. Having that "outdoors in" idea wasn't in vogue back then.

We used to have these little tabletop Christmas trees. This one is white, but we had shiny green ones, different sizes. I loved turning all the room lights in to enjoy the many little, colourful lights.

I love this photo for so many reasons from the lift in the girl's hair to the avocado stained piano. But I also love the silvery tinsel garland that was all the rage but now is nowhere to be seen and is probably hidden in old basements.

This month is one for big anniversaries both good and bad.

It's the 50th anniversary of the classic "Breakfast at Tiffany's". It's the 30th anniversary of the sudden and tragic death of Natalie Wood (Wagner). We just passed the 48th anniversary of JFK's assassination (not a milestone year, but his death always seems relevant). 25 years ago this month, the incomparable Cary Grant died as well as another unforgettable person, Freddie Mercury and George Harrison of the Beatles and Mary Kay Ash of Mary Kay Cosmetics.

Why do we mark these anniversaries? Different reasons when you look at the list. The sweet Audrey Hepburn was one of a kind and her performance in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" will always be a favourite. Her persona seems to transcend time. A timeless beauty both on the inside and out.

As for other anniversaries, we think of them as they seem unresolved in actuality or just in our own psyches. People are still pointing fingers at each other over the killing of JFK. It seems that most of us don't believe that the man they accused is necessarily the one who did it. There are so many conspiracy theories with this one that references to this incredibly tragic event are still being built into many movie and television scripts.

Lately, a potentially opportunistic captain of a boat is making bold statements about the death of Natalie Wood. Her accident at sea seemed very strange and so tragic, but are there grounds for bringing her husband to investigation or trial? Fodder for the media, that is the only thing for certain at this point.

The killing of John Lennon sent shock waves all around the world. But this month 25 years ago his co-band member George Harrison died. We could all agree that he wasn't the mouth piece for the Beatles, but still a member of the fab four's passing is certainly worth marking year after year.

Another gentle soul died the same year as Harrison. Cary Grant is still considered the quintessential man of men, suave, funny, charming. He's still the model who many men try to emulate, the model who many women use as a yardstick to measure up their husbands or boyfriends.. I'll always remember him in "House Boat" and "Arsenic and Old Lace".

Freddie Mercury was an incredible and complicated man, who's sounds are imitated but never successfully duplicated. His voice and look were one of a kind. "We Will Rock You" was a musical homage to the great man, which has entertained audiences around the world.

When I think of the colour pink, how can I think of anyone but Mary Kay Ash, the brainchild of the famous cosmetics empire? It's hard to believe that her pink Cadillacs are still around. Ash empowered women in the way that works best for us. It's wonderful that her legacy lives on. She was definitely a strong symbol of "girl power"!

One of the most solemn segments of the Academy Awards is when they do a musical slide show "In Memoriam". I find it so sad that so many greats have already died. I'm such a vintage girl at heart that I miss them more than I am enamoured with current day icons. It's definitely true that in order to understand our present and our future, we need to look at the past.

You're A Good Man Charlie Brown

This week, our neighbours to the south celebrate Thanksgiving. I noticed in the television schedule that the "Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" special will be airing on Thursday. The Peanuts cartoon strips ran from 1950 to 2000, illustrated by Charles M. Schulz. I think that Schulz's fame rocketed with the many made for TV specials such as "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" and my personal favourite "A Charlie Brown Christmas". Anytime I see a sad, little unwanted tree during the holiday season, I refer to it as the Charlie Brown tree. The ugly duckling fantasy even applied to a bit of greenery in the genius mind of Schulz.

Whenever I happen to tune out of a conversation, I remember Charlie Brown's teacher, who's voice was heard, but her words were always muddled as if she was just a buzzing annoyance to the class. There was something so pathetic and lovable about Charlie Brown. His peers seemed to be both friends and foe.

THE GANG!

The idea that we could all relate to one or more of his friends is not an accident:
-Woodstock - Snoopy's best friend - a yellow flightless bird with communication skills known only to Snoopy
-Snoopy - Charlie Brown's lovable, but sometimes devious dog. He was modelled after one of Schulz's childhood dogs. He is probably the most recognizable Peanuts character
-Franklin - First black character in a comic strip
-Lucy Van Pelt - I loved her evil little character traits. She was the older sister of Linus. I always loved her "Psychotherapy 5 cents" stand. Other kids had lemonade stands, but not Lucy!
-Linus Van Pelt - The meek younger brother of Lucy, never without his blanket and sucking his thumb
-Peppermint Patty - A freckle-faced tomboy neighbour who had a crush on Charlie Brown
-Sally Brown - Younger sister of Charlie Brown, who always had fabulous naturally curly hair
-Pig-Pen - The poor dirty little boy who was always surrounded by a cloud of dust
-Schroeder - The mini-grand piano playing virtuoso. He loved classical music and Beethoven. He was considered probably Charlie Brown's best friend.

There were many other minor recurring characters. Each with a bit of Schulz in them.

It seems that a lot of the cartoon characters from the 1950's were really meant to entertain adults, with a lot of adult humour and references. "The Flintstones" is a great example of that.

There is something sweet and pathetic about Charlie Brown, who was never called just Charlie. He was the lovable loser who was constantly outsmarted by kids and animals alike. But we love him no matter what, because he had endless determination despite his endless insecurities and failures.

One Man's Pan Am Collection Came in Handy!

The Real Pan Am Flight Attendants (who were called stewardesses then...political correctness was not necessarily practiced )

Imagine being a collector. Now imagine your collection enjoys the benefits of being part of a television series. Imagine that television series is Pan Am.

Despite being cancelled, the lead up to this show generated much positive buzz in the industry. Hoping to cash in on the Mad Men retro vibe, the opening episodes did well, but unfortunately did not 'fly'. Get it? Fly? hahaha. sorry, bad joke.

Anyway, Kelly Cusack who worked for Pan Am during it's last decade has managed to collect more than 10 000 pieces of memorabilia and has the largest collection known. Many of his pieces were used in the show - talk about authentic!

"Diamonds are a girl's best friend". Where did that expression come from? Was it Marilyn who coined it or was she the one who put it on the tips of our tongue? Trends come and go, fashions have a tendency to recycle itself in interesting ways. However diamonds seem to be as popular as ever. Elizabeth Taylor said it best "you can't cry on a diamond's shoulder and diamonds won't kieep you warm at night, but they're sure fun when the sun shines". And who could argue with an icon who owned some of the most valuable examples in the world?!

It was in the early 1900's the development of diamond saws and lathes enabled the modern cuts we still see today such as the popular "round brilliant" In 1905 the largest rough gem-qualty diamond in the world was found by Frederick Wells. I just love looking at beautiful diamonds. I'm drawn to them like a moth to a flame. Our enduring love of this precious stone has been the headache and hearache for many (men mostly)! POP GOES THE WARHOL!

Andy Warhol is such an icon of cool, retro style. This American artist is best known for his pop-art style - the 1960's paintings of household products such as soup cans and his silkscreen method of printing famous people like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. He was also a prolific filmmaker and producer.

"When you think about it, department stores are kind of like museums".

Warhol became obsessed with mass produced products as well as mass producing his own works of art. He founded The Factory, where employees frantically worked on reproducing his prints and posters. This location also became the hub of more than 300 experimental underground films.

I love the idea of paying homage to such an interesting retro artist by applying current technology to older aesthetics. Warhol loved the idea of mass production, not hording his creations in secret like many other artists do. So it seems so fitting that we honour him now by doing what he would have done. After all, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

HAVE YOU GOT THE 501 BLUES?

I remember back in the days of elementary school, I made a weird promise to myself that I'd never wear jeans. Don't know where that idea came from. Now I'm known as the queen of jean who delights in denim! So I found it really interesting that the famous Levi's brand is reintroducing their many styles from the past starting from their inception time of the 1870's. Through their Vintage Clothing line, Levi's has carefully reproduced many of the (shirts and pants) styles in terms of fit, fabric and characteristics associated with specific time periods. This way we get in touch with styles not normally available today, feel that vintage vibe and be a part of Levi's history. A lot of the clothing look very current. FLYING HIGH ON FASHION

I am happy to see that the new television series called "Pan Am" has survived its freshman season so far. At first this show interested me because of its retro connection to "Mad Men" which is all the rage these days. I am of course more interested in the show as I am a vintage girl at heart.

I have become firmly invested in the story lines and the main characters. What I find truly amazing and mesmerizing are all the incredible fashions that are displayed in every scene. One would think that a show based on airline stewardesses would have them in uniform most of the time. But it's nice to see them in times of leisure and sometimes even surrounded by luxury.

I would love to have the figures of these actresses as their outfits look like second skin most of the time. I wonder if that "Pan Am" company issue girdle really does come into play?! From the cute little hats on their heads, to the the prim gloves to cover their delicate hands, down to the spotless shoes, the costume designer has gone to great lengths for authenticity and fab stylishness.

Recognize this beautiful woman?

I'm not going to make you jump hoops and try to guess, but this is Peggy Lee. The young Ms Lee who first sang with Benny Goodman is most notably known for her hit song "Fever". A song that is still being covered to this day by current artists.

As most singers of her day, Peggy began her career on the radio. At the young age of 17 she went to Los Angeles where Benny Goodman saw her singing. At the time, he was looking to replace his current singer and Ms Lee got the job. For the next two years she sang with his orchestra and spun out several No. 1 selling hits such as "Why Don't You Do Right", "Black Coffee" and "Is That All There Is".

With her alluring sound, smooth demeanor and distinctive style, she was very comfortable in embracing the new genre of rock and roll. Recognizing the changes in current music, she maintained her successful career by also voicing in Disney's, "The Lady and The Tramp". Yes, that's her singing "He's a Tramp".

It's Going Swimmingly Well!

OK, so I'm a big wimp. It's the beginning of November and I am already dreading the winter the way pioneers used to dread a bad storm before the harvest. I am NOT a hardy Canadian made of tough, chewy bacon, heavily sugared maple syrup or bones made of hockey sticks. I'm already dreaming about tropical vacations and as always, contemplating moving closer to the Equator.

When I was perusing the current issue of Marie Claire magazine, I was delighted to see clothing geared toward tropical destinations. Ahhh...a girl can dream!

It never ceases to amaze me how retro looking current fashions seem to be. If I ignored the glossy look of this publication, I could swear I'm looking at something from a half century ago.

I came upon a beach theme photo shoot of an Aussie actress modelling the latest in resort wear. Have a look these outfits and let me know what you think. This first one looks like a simple shirt and shorts set. But the colouring and stitching of the shirt along with the narrow, plunging neckline is so remniscent of neoprene scuba gear. The body-hugging nature of the material also lends itself to that idea.

This outfit looks straight out of a scene from "To Sir With Love". The vibrant crimson is so cheery. Again, the way in which the material hugs the body is such a reminder of swimwear or scuba wear.

And these purses by Juicy Couture make such a statement with their vibrant colours. It's nice to see that beach bags aren't just made of straw or sedately coloured canvas.

Mixing water gear with a dressy sweater ...It has a surf trend feel about it. She can go from the beach to the beach side cocktail party in no time! The animal print is as hot as it ever was.

Some of the stitching details of the swimsuit bottom are reminiscent of wetsuits .

I love the colour blocking which is also very reminiscent of scuba gear done up in a sexy, feminine manner.

These outfits may not be genuinely retro, but I can see such love and reverence for retro fashions in these recent creations. Sometimes you CAN reinvent the wheel!

Mmmm....Is It Home Made? Martha Might Be Shaking Her Head

Last Saturday night Husband and I had a couple over for dinner. We spent a good part of the day cleaning the house - ie. vacuuming, dusting, putting stuff away, cleaning the bathrooms, setting the table, doing dishes, lining up the booze etc. The one thing we didn't do was actually cook the meal. Our hors d'oeurves and desserts were also store bought. OK, I made a cucumber salad to go with our Pakistani take-out.

I'm finding that more and more we have opted to entertain in this manner. We have noticed that our friends are doing similar. A long time ago I wrote about the family Sunday dinner being potentially a lost tradition. What about the idea of actually cooking the meal when hosting a dinner? Is it acceptable in this day and age to entertain in this fashion? Or are our friends saying "yeah, nice meal, but it would have been nice to get something homemade"?!

My guilty conscience would have me believe that it's about getting together, great company, good booze, good music and that kind of thing. It's a lot nicer to have the same meal in someone's home than at the restaurant where the service might be better, but it wouldn't be as comfortable and relaxing.

I did take out all the food from their partially melted styrofoam containers and put them into nice serving bowls, which went in to a warming oven until we were all ready to eat. In the meantime, we entertained with tasty samosas and a nice wine.

We hadn't shared a meal with this couple in a long time so it was nice to catch-up with them. Isn't that the important thing? Back in the days of The Beaver, a good housewife wouldn't dream of serving food prepared by anyone but herself and perhaps her mother. What would her husband and the guests think she does all day? Where are the fresh ingredients and the enticing aroma of food cooking in the kitchen to welcome the guests into the house?

I would like to continue in this fashion, doing the occasional meal when I feel less tired or busy the days leading up to the dinner night.

On the heels of last week's 3 part blogs on the movie "Midnight In Paris", I'm happy to tell you about a fab exhibit at our local Bata Shoe Museum featuring foot fashions from the Roaring 20's. We are lucky to live in a city which has many wonderful museums and galleries. I find it unique that our city has a place solely devoted to footwear.

"Born in the age of post-war exuberance, nurtured by the dynamism of the machine and seduced by the lure of the exotic, the Roaring 20s infused modern society and fashion with an energetic modernity. As hemlines rose, shoes became increasingly important for stylish women and many of the decade's exceptional shoes illustrate the electrifying synergy between fashion and design."

Everyone can conjure up images of what the Roaring 20's looked like with flashy flappers and jaunty men in pinstriped suits. But have we thought about what they wore on their feet?

These shoes were made by Lady Luxury. This style represents the tension felt by women in the 1920's to become equal citizens. Women were encouraged to be pretty and practical so the male influence of the buttons adds an almost military feel. The sensible heel style and height are also indications of the attempt at being striking a balance of aesthetics and practicality.

These shoes were made by Philips. Women in those days were encouraged to in athletic pursuits. This bright pair are red rubber, "silver wing" bathing shoes. They were worn by swimmers and fashionistas alike

This graphic Starburst shoe made by Th. J. De Bont could be worn today. I think I have a pair which look similar with a more sedate all-over dark colour. The term "flapper" derived from young birds flapping their wings as they left the nest. This "Gatsby" inspired shoe design has the Deco starburst motif shown very prominently.

These shoes in classic black and white illustrate the stark ideas of designers and architects of that time. The small hits of bronze are reminiscent of many Deco architectural details on structures such as the Chrysler building.

Paris Is a Feast - Moveable in Time...Part 3 of 3

This is a long one, so I'm breaking it up into three parts. Hope you all enjoy the latest of my inspirations...Here is Part 3 of 3

Sadly, Gil and his new par amour parted ways at Maxim's. Arianna was offered a designing job that she just couldn't refuse. She didn't want to live in her present, as Gil ad originally not wanted to live in his.

"This is the time we are in. Everything moves so fast; life is noisy and complicated."

The more Gil moved back and forth through time, the more I preferred his 1920's excursions. The harsh realities of his present day seemed unappetizing and bland. However losing Arianna made him realise something.

"If I ever want to write something worthwhile, I have to get rid of my illusions and that I'd be happier in the past is probably one of them..."

Back in the present, Gil made an important life decision. A chance meeting with a woman on a bridge at night cemented his conviction of the path he had just chosen. They walked away as the rain began to fall. After all, Paris is more beautiful in the rain...

Throughout the movie, Gil meets such an incredible array of famous names: Picasso was in love with Gil's new fantasy, Gertrude Stein accepted the request to read Gil's novel, Salvador Dali found inspiration in Gil's face for his now famous (melting clock) Surrealist piece.

There were also amazing lines from the movie that really inspired the writer/artist/philosopher in me:

"No subject is terrible if the story is true, if the prose is clean and honest and if it affirms courage and grace under pressure..."

At a smoky night club, Gil was still in shock when he saw Edith Piaf mesmerizing her audience. After that he went to a cozy bistro where the Fitzgeralds introduced him to Ernest Hemingway. This meeting was particularly meaningful and overwhelming for Gil as he had just completed his first novel and he wanted desperately to transition from his well-paying profession to becoming a "starving writer".

Wilson's cold and unfeeling fiancé didn't share his character's romantic notions of finding inspiration in Paris like those he admired such as Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Gil believed that 1920's Paris was the best era in history. His admiration of the past was in fact the main theme of this film.

Gil and Hemingway went to meet Gertrude Stein who was having a passionate disagreement with Picasso about his latest piece, which she thought lacked his usual touch. There Gil met a beautiful woman named Arianna, who was a fictional mistress of Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. She was a beautiful and enigmatic French woman with aspirations of becoming a fashion designer like Coco Chanel. She was the antithesis of Gil's fiancé.

Arianna also dreamed of living in the past. Her ideal time was "la belle époque" - late 19th century Paris where she dreamed of rubbing shoulders with the 'bon vivant' in Maxim's. One night when she and Gil went for a romantic moonlit stroll, they crossed the magic timeline together into Arianna's dream. At La Moulin Rouge, they met the brooding Toulouse Lautrec as well as Paul Gauguin and Edgar Degas. Ironically enough, these artists' idea of "L'age D'or" was the Renaissance.

I recently watched a Woody Allen film called "Midnight In Paris" starring Owen Wilson. Allen's directorial/writing styles may not appeal to some, but I certainly loved this movie as the star of the story wasn't one of the actors, but my favourite city of lights.

Wilson's character (Gil) was on vacation in Paris with his flighty fiancé and her parents. One night he was wandering the streets a little drunk and upset, when as the clock struck twelve, a beautiful vintage 1920's car pulled up and the people within urged him to accompany them. They went to a party for Jean Cocteau where the who's who of the American expatriate club was in attendance. It turned out that Gil was somehow transported back to 1920's Paris. Cole Porter was at the piano crooning away. Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald introduced themselves to Gil, who began to realise that something magical was happening.

The room was meticulously decorated like a Parisian style salon in the grand days of the roaring 20's. It was a smoky and festive room full of laughter and not a care in the world. The women were glamorously dressed in their most glittery flapper dresses. Men had their hair slicked back, wearing impeccably smart suits with debonair flair. The champagne was flowing and so was the fun.

The magic of the evening had spread outside. The darkened streets were also transformed as there were many beautiful vintage cars parked quietly for the night. And during these scenes, Cole Porter jauntily sang his famous tune "Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love)". I was also immediately plucked from my sofa and into these scenes as if Allen invited the viewers into this wonderland time.
